Born a Crime By Trevor Noah

When I found out that Trevor Noah was taking over as host for the The Daily Show, I thought to myself who is this person and where did he come from?  I had seen him once on Gabriel Iglesias Comedy Central "Show Stand Up Revolution" and thought he was kind of funny. Since I only watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart sporadically, I don't remember seeing him or segments that involved him. The day I heard his autobiography was coming out I thought maybe it might be interesting so I ordered a copy for our library. When I sat down and read this I was surprised by his background being born to a white father and a black mother during apartheid. Hearing his struggle about growing up having to hide his identity from the government which resulted in a strained relationship with his father left me in awe. Growing up I couldn't imagine having to hide from the government just because I have parents from different ethnic backgrounds. Reading about his childhood I was surprised how they managed to survive everything without getting caught. I loved hearing about all of his misadventures through out his childhood and adolescent years. The DJing at parties to his attempts at dating made me gasp and laugh out loud (literally). I cried real tears when his strong willed mother was shot in the head by his stepfather. I couldn't comprehend how this woman who prayed on a regular basis, was in church all day on Sundays, and tried to live a christian life; how could this have happen to her and she lived to talk about it. When the books ends with her coming out of the hospital and the doctors having no true definition as to why the bullet changed directions, I think its safe to say that what happened was truly a miracle. I would definitely recommend this book to readers out there who love autobiographies or just trying something new because this is a really good one. I had my skepticism at first but his story pulled me in and kept me captivated until the end. The best book I have read in 2017 so far.
